Helping mums lose their baby weight with support and understanding

Lose Baby Weight has launched an innovative nutritional and weight loss program to provide Australian mums with a one of a kind service, specifically created for mums to help them return to their pre-pregnancy weight with safe, healthy and proven results.

Sydney mum Rhian Allen, the founder of Lose Baby Weight, says that in Australia each year there are approximately 260,000 mums who give birth and of these new mums statistics say that 40% will have retained their pregnancy weight gain 12 months after the birth of their baby*.

"This research also states that if mums have not returned to their pre pregnancy weight six months after the birth of their baby then they are at much greater risk of being overweight or obese 10 years later," Rhian says.

"Combine these statistics with the fact that women are not eating enough fruit and vegetables or doing enough exercise and it paints a gloomy picture for mums who are trying to lose their baby weight."

 The National Health Survey** results among women aged 25-44 showed that;

• 75.9% ate less than 2 piece of fruit per day
• 56% ate less than 2 pieces of vegetables per day
• 32.4% did no exercise
• 50% were classed as overweight or obese

The company offers a variety of programs to choose from – all of which offer proven plans to optimise the weight loss, health and nutrition of the mums - and they stand behind their results with a 30 day money back guarantee.

"We believe that the key to successful post partum weight loss is a multilayered approach," says Rhian. "Through the programs we incorporate key nutritional supplements, meal replacements smoothies, a personal trainer created exercise program, metabolism boosting meal plans and recipes, one on one weight loss advice and support, extensive nutritional inform ation and entry into exclusive offers and promotions.

"We also have a range of programs that are designed for new mums - although we don't recommend mums begin any weight loss campaign until at least 6-8 weeks after the birth of their baby and the focus on these plans is nutrition with a maximum weight loss goal of 500 grams per week."

Visit the website for recipes, weight loss and nutritional information and to see testimonials from mums who have lost their weight plus information from health experts on the products and programs.

Increase in Cases of Whooping Cough

Over the last two months, an increase in cases of whooping cough (pertussis) in school aged children has been reported in NSW. The following information on how to identify, protect and prevent the spread of whooping cough comes from NSW Health

Watch out for whooping cough
• Whooping cough starts like a cold with a blocked or runny nose, sneezing, conjunctivitis (sore, teary eyes), a mild fever and an occasional cough.

• The cough gets worse and severe bouts of uncontrollable coughing develop. Coughing bouts can be followed by vomiting, choking or taking a big gasping breath which causes a "whooping" sound. The cough can last for many weeks and can be worse at night.

• Some newborns don’t cough at all but stop breathing completely and turn blue. Other babies have difficulties feeding or they can choke and gag.

• Older children and adults may just have a mild cough that doesn't go away. In adults the cough commonly lasts 5-7 weeks, sometimes longer. In China, whooping cough is known as the 100-day cough!

Why is whooping cough so serious?
Whooping cough can just be an annoying cough for adults and older children but for babies it can be life threatening. Severity is closely related to a baby’s age. Newborns and premature infants are at greatest risk.

Protect your baby from whooping cough
• Newborns are not immune until they have had their whooping cough vaccines.

• The vaccine for babies is given at 2, 4 and 6 months. The first dose can be given as early as 6 weeks.

• Immunise your baby on time so they can be protected as soon as possible. If your baby’s vaccines are overdue, speak to your GP about catching up.

• Check if your baby has been vaccinated. Look at their Blue Book, speak to your GP or ring the Australian Childhood Immunisation Register on 1800 653 809. You can also check the register online

• Whooping cough vaccine is effective but doesn’t protect all babies. You still need to watch out, even if your baby is immunised.

• Keep people with a cough away from your baby, especially until the first 3 whooping cough vaccines have been given.

Protect older children
• By immunising older children with boosters at 4 years and in high school, you give them some protection against whooping cough. This also helps to stop spread to others.

• Check if your child has been vaccinated. Look at their Blue Book, speak to your GP or ring the Australian Childhood Immunisation Register on 1800 653 809. You can also check the register online

• Remember that even immunised children can sometimes catch whooping cough, but their illness is often milder.

Adults can protect themselves too
• Adults can get whooping cough and can spread the infection to babies. They may just have mild symptoms and may not realise that their cough could cause harm.

• If you’re a new parent, you can top-up your immunity by getting a whooping cough booster. Boosters are also recommended for grandparents and anyone else caring for infants.

• For a limited time, free whooping cough booster is available for new parents, grandparents and carers of babies under 12 months of age. See your GP for a booster.

Profile: Sharon from Queen Bee

As part of a new feature on The Bride's Diary Blog, we will be introducing you to individuals who work in the wedding industry... giving you an insight into who they are and why they love weddings!

This week we have been chatting to Sharon Chim, founder of Queen Bee - the online boutique that is a saviour for new mums and pregnant women! Sharon spoke to us about her  young family - the driving force behind the concept for Queen Bee, as well as some touching moments helping women feel great throughout their pregnancies and into parenthood!

Tell us a little about your business…
Queen Bee is an exclusive Australian online boutique which brings you a fabulous range of stylish, quality maternity and nursing wear sourced from Australia and around the globe. Our mission is to make every ladies transition to motherhood as fashionable as it is beautiful.

We want to create a special place where mums & mums-to-be can feel like they belong and they have ease of a great variety of choice. They have valuable input e.g. we invite our customers to post product reviews, which assist future customers in making the right choice. The reactions on both sides toward these reviews are monumental as they help us to continue to provide the latest fashion trends and for the mums and next day delivery in nearly all cases.

We like to provide as much detailed info as possible to make the online shopping experience a breeze. We understand a lot of our customers are either still working whilst pregnant OR are already fulltime mums with another on the way, so time is so important....

What is your role in the business and why are you passionate about it?
The changes that a pregnant woman goes through can make them feel frumpy, awkward and unattractive. Beautiful maternity clothes can help balance the figure and the emotions equating to the ‘look good, feel good’ promise. Maternity wear has the TOTAL figure in mind and accommodates the ‘mummy to be’ right through to baby’s arrival AND after and to be so stylishly smart casual.

Gorgeous maternity wear, especially in the more sophisticated after 5 wear, has made the difference in providing total confidence to the mum to match it with the best at those very special occasions and to celebrate their pregnancy and their beautiful silhouette enhanced by beautiful maternity clothes.

My role in the business is to run it and manage it, provide strategic direction, and push sales. I am also the graphic designer – my hobby! I am passionate about my work and love setting targets and goals to achieve.

How long have you been working in the industry?
I founded Queen Bee in 2005.

What are some of your past business experiences?
Many years ago I used to own a busy café, and then went back to university at 28 to complete a masters in accounting. I worked in chartered accounting for 3.5 years then fell pregnant and began Queen Bee!

What is one of your favourite recollections from your business?
Some ladies have desperately needed a dress or bikini shortly before flying out overseas, and we have express couriered the goods to them on the morning of their flight... One lady was so impressed with her wrap dress that she emailed photos of herself to us.

A lady rang one day and the first words were ‘please help me, nothing fits me anymore’ she was in a real dilemma. She received her phone order the next day and related to us that we were her saviours.
A woman rang and said that she needed to buy some maternity clothes for her daughter
who was so depressed that she had put on so much weight with the pregnancy and didn’t want to go out to shop. The mum then put an order through and asked us to remove the size labels so the daughter didn’t know what sizes they were. So no dramas and they were both ecstatic.

A lady rang and enquired about bengaline pants and maternity tops. I explained the features and benefits of overbelly and underbelly wear and asked when her baby was due, she said ‘oh I’m not pregnant, I just want pants that are going to be comfortable and tops that are going to hide my unattractive bumps, I am 70 you know!’ She sounded very hip!

Tell us a bit about your family and home life…
It’s very busy! With a son in kindergarten and Koby (3 years) at home full time with me, I mainly work at night after 8pm when they are asleep. I began Queen Bee so I could spend more time with my children and I won’t fully concentrate on the business for another few years until Koby is in school. In the meantime we have an amazing team and the business has been doing really well without me in the office!

How do you enjoy spending your spare time?
Relaxing with my kids – beautiful dinners, simple train rides, anything that involves special times with my children.

What is your most memorable life experience?
Definitely the birth of my children!

What are your plans for the future?
More family holidays, a bigger warehouse!
