Loosing the Baby Weight

Worried about losing that baby belly? Don't sweat it! The BD team has found this great article that we thoroughly recommend to you, Weight Expectations on the Women's Health Website so read on for great tips…

"Each week the gossip mags boast photos of the latest celebrity mum to magically drop their baby weight in two seconds flat. They look fabulous - why don't you? Probably because you're normal. Germany's national Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care has released research on post-pregnancy weight loss, saying a woman should take six months to lose pregnancy weight. Hear that, Heidi Klum? The Institute warns that women are under too much pressure to lose weight quickly after giving birth, putting their health at risk.

While Australia has yet to release guidelines on pregnancy weight (due in 2011), the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) backs the German research. Dr Ted Weaver, President of RANZCOG, points out that extra padding during pregnancy is not only normal, it's essential. "A woman will gain extra fatty tissue when pregnant; it's her body's reservoir for breastfeeding," he says.

Diet is a four-letter word

Dr Hannah Dahlen, vice-president of the Australian College of Midwives, says too many new mums have unrealistic body expectations, and could be putting their health at risk. "Trying to lose weight too soon by dieting increases the risk of problems, particularly with breastfeeding, when you need a healthy, balanced diet," she says. And while breastfeeding helps some women lose weight, for others it's not so easy. "That's still normal," says Dr Weaver. "There's a wide range of 'normal'."

Take your own sweet time

While exercise is the best way to get your body back, it's important to ease into it slowly. "You need to rehabilitate your body first," says Dr Weaver. For post C-section mums, forget the gym for at least three months. "You've had major surgery - your stomach muscles have been cut," Dr Dahlen says. "Start with something gentle like swimming. No lifting weights." So next time you see a size zero yummy mummy on TV, remember who the normal one is. "I'd say they'd be wearing some pretty tight control garments under there anyway," Dr Weaver says. Ha! We knew it.

EVOLUTION, BABY

Women of the future will be shorter, plumper and fertile for longer, according to a new study. It's the first modern research to offer evidence that humans are still evolving, offering hope that one day the Summernats will merely be a thing of distant memory.Professor Stephen Stearns, an evolutionary biologist from Yale University in the US, led a team of researchers who tracked data from more than 14,000 people, beginning in 1948. They found that shorter, heavier women tended to have more children, as did women with lower blood pressure and lower cholesterol and (unsurprisingly) women who had their first child earlier or entered menopause later. These traits were then passed on to their daughters, who in turn also had more kids. If these trends continue, Prof. Stearns estimates the average woman in 2409 will be 2cm shorter and 1kg heavier than she is now. She'll also enter menopause 10 months later than the current average."

Now that you've read this, pop over to Women's Health for more tips on regaining your ideal body.

  • 2 green onions, finely sliced
  • 2 tablespoons sweet chilli sauce (optional)
  • 8 butter lettuce leaves
  • 4 sheets wholemeal lavash bread
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded barbecued chicken (see note)
  • 1 cup grated tasty cheese
Method:
  1. Combine tomatoes, corn, onion, and sauce (if using) in a bowl.
  2. Arrange 2 lettuce leaves over 1 half of each lavash sheet. Top with tomato mixture, chicken and cheese. Roll up tightly from 1 short end to enclose filling.
  3. Cut each wrap in half. Secure with baking paper or string.
Notes:
  • Makes 4
  • You will need half a barbecued chicken for this recipe

Ingredients:
  • 1 quantity Basic muffin mix (see related recipe)
  • 1 cup grated tasty cheese
  • 1/2 cup marinated sun-dried tomatoes, drained, chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
Method:
  1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Lightly grease a 12-hole, 1/3-cup capacity non-stick muffin pan.
  2. Follow step 2 for making Basic muffin mix (see related recipe), omitting sugar and coffee and adding cheese, tomatoes and salt to flour.
  3. Follow step 3 for making Cappuccino muffins (see related recipe), reducing cooking time to 20 minutes. Serve.
Notes:
  • Makes 12
  • Muffins freeze well in snap-lock bags, but are best eaten on the day they are made.

Ingredients:
  • 300g (2 cups) self-raising flour
  • Pinch of salt
  • 90g butter, cut into cubes
  • 160ml (2/3 cup) milk
  • Plain flour, to dust
  • 60g (1/4 cup) pizza sauce
  • 80g (1 cup) coarsely grated cheddar
  • 150g sliced leg ham, coarsely chopped
  • 1 x 225g can pineapple pieces, drained on paper towel
  • Extra milk, to brush
Method:
  1. Preheat oven to 210°C. Line a baking tray with non-stick baking paper. Sift the flour and salt into a large bowl. Use your fingertips to rub the butter into the flour until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add the milk. Use a round-bladed knife in a cutting motion to mix until evenly incorporated and the mixture begins to hold together.
  2. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead until smooth. Use a lightly floured rolling pin to roll out the dough into a 30 x 40cm rectangle.
  3. Spread the pizza sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a 2cm border around the edge. Sprinkle with the cheddar, ham and pineapple. Starting from a long side, roll up firmly to form a log. Brush the edge with a little extra milk and press down firmly to seal the log. Cut crossways into 12 equal portions, about 3cm thick. Place scrolls on the prepared tray. Bake in preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven and set aside to cool.
Notes:
  • Makes 12. These pizza scrolls will keep for up to 2 days. Store in an airtight container in the fridge and bring to room temperature before serving.
  • Pack a pizza scroll with chilled apple juice, a bag of mixed nuts and dried fruit.
