Healthy Eating Tips

BabyCenter offers some great advice on how to
eat well when you are pregnant. If you are trying to conceive you may want to get into healthy eating habits early. Here are BabyCenter's tips on how to fine-tune your diet - even if you already eat well...

Now that you're a mum-to-be, it's important to try and increase your intake of certain vitamins and minerals (such as folic acid and iron) and kilojoules (slightly) during your pregnancy. If your diet is poor to begin with, it is even more important to make the transition to eating delicious, nutritious, well-balanced meals. Limit junk food, as it offers little more than empty kilojoules (kilojoules with few or no nutrients.)

Your body becomes more efficient when you're expecting a baby and makes even better use of the energy you obtain from the food you eat. Following the old saying "eating for two" is not necessary. The average woman needs an extra 300 kilojoules in her diet per day for the first trimester, 600kJ during the second trimester and 900kJ in the last trimester. One slice of bread is the equivalent of 300 kJ.

Your own appetite is the best indication of how much food you need to eat and you may find it fluctuating during the course of your pregnancy. For example in the first few weeks your appetite may fall away dramatically and you may not feel like eating proper meals, especially if you suffer from nausea or sickness. During the middle part of your pregnancy your appetite may be the same as before you were pregnant or slightly increased. Towards the end of your pregnancy your appetite will probably increase, but if you suffer from heartburn or a full feeling after eating you may find it helpful to have small frequent meals.

The best rule to remember is to eat when you are hungry. Don't worry about your changing appetite as long as you are following the advice given about the type of food you need to eat and you are gaining weight at the appropriate rate, which your midwife/doctor will monitor.

Top Australian Baby Names in 2009

Choosing a name for you new bundle of joy can be a difficult decision... whether you’re looking for a name that will stand out from the crowd or something more traditional, it’s always good to know what the popular names are. BabyCenter has released their list of the most popular names of 2009.

The data was compiled from thousands of names supplied by
BabyCenter Australia members who gave birth or were expecting a baby between January and December 2009. Below the list is BabyCenters' analysis of the trends for girls and boys names.
20 Most Popular Girls Names:

• Isabella
• Olivia
• Lily
• Chloe
• Emily
• Charlotte
• Ella
• Ava
• Amelia
• Sophie
• Sienna
• Mia
• Grace
• Ruby
• Zoe
• Isabelle
• Madison
• Emma
• Matilda
• Georgia
20 most popular boys' names:

• Jack
• Lachlan
• Cooper
• William
• Joshua
• Thomas
• Oliver
• Riley
• Noah
• Max
• James
• Ethan
• Aiden
• Liam
• Jackson
• Lucas
• Alexander
• Oscar
• Charlie
• Connor
Trends for girls

Isabella is the new number one on the girls’ name list for 2009. Isabella was fourth on last year’s list but this year it is even more popular, knocking Lily from the number one position.

It is very likely that the Twlight-phenomena is responsible for the rise of ‘Isabella’. The heroine of the books and films that have taken the world by storm is named Isabella (nicknamed ‘Bella’). Isabelle, without the A, is also in the top 20 names of this year, taking out the girls’ award for the most variations of spelling. There are seven different ways that BabyCenter members spell Isabelle!

Another name which has risen in popularity is the ever-popular Olivia, and we also see the rise of Grace, up from number 20 in 2008 to number 12.

New girls’ names to make the list are Matilda and Emma. Though they are traditional names there were not seen on the list last year. The rise of Matilda could possibly be related to the amount of publicity surrounding Heath Ledger’s daughter Matilda in the time since his death.

On the downward dip are the names Hannah and Caitlyn which have both slipped out of the Top 20 list in 2009.
Trends for boys

It’s no surprise that Jack takes the top spot in the most popular boys’ names list in 2009. The name has long been very popular, and last year it took the number two position after Lachlan. Lachlan this year is still in the number two position and neither name looks like losing its popularity soon.

Newcomers to this year’s list are the names Connor and Oscar, knocking out Jayden and Samuel, both of which left the list this year.

Climbing the list this year are Cooper, Thomas and Max. Could it be a coincidence that Max is gaining in popularity just as the film Where the Wild Things is released, with the character Max played by the super-cute actor Max Records?

Losing popularity from last year are the names Riley, Ethan, Lucas and Charlie. And the award for variety of spellings goes to Aiden, which has seven variations in use.

French Market Baskets

The Market Basket Co

Do you need to organise you life and your home? Add a French Market Basket to your home and you will wonder how you ever lived without it!
French Market Baskets are great for shopping trips with the kids, picnics, or even just as a stylish storage alternative around the home.

Ten years ago, Lindy McLeod was living abroad and while visiting France, admired the women of Paris rushing home in the evenings and on weekends with their fresh produce – fruit, breads, meats and cheeses – brimming in their seriously chic shopping baskets. She bought some for herself which rapidly became an indispensable part of her life.

After returning to Australia and realising how many plastic bags we use as a nation (at its peak over 7 billion annually!), Lindy began investigating the possibility of bringing a classic French-style shopping basket to Australia.

She is now able to share the market basket shopping experience with Australians. A simple, stylish, multi-functional shopping basket, a household item in France, is now available in Australia.

The baskets from
The Market Basket Co. are genuine French market baskets, hand crafted in Morocco from natural palm fibre with strong Moroccan leather handles. There are a variety of styles to choose from - you are sure to find one to suit your life!
