Natural Hormone - Latest Contraceptive Breakthrough

For the first time in Australia, women now have access to an oral contraceptive pill delivering the hormone oestradiol valerate, which converts to oestradiol, the same as natural oestrogen produced by the female body.[i]

The announcement is timed to coincide with World Contraception Day, which encourages women to consider their contraceptive options.

Qlaira® (oestradiol valerate and dienogest) comes 50 years after the introduction of the Pill.

Clinical trials have shown Qlaira® to be a reliable contraceptive with good cycle control.

Leading family planning expert and sexual health physician Dr Christine Read said this latest innovation in oral contraception provides a new option for women.

“On World Contraception Day, and in the year of the 50th anniversary of the Pill, it is important to remember a form of contraception that is suitable for one woman may not be appropriate for the next,” said Dr Read. “Qlaira® is another step in the development of oral contraceptive pills that respond to the unique needs of each woman.”

“Over the years, combined oral contraceptives have contained new progestins, but until now the oestrogen component has remained the same. Qlaira® is the first Pill in Australia which contains oestradiol valerate to provide efficient contraception while also providing good cycle control.”

Once swallowed, the hormonal compound, oestradiol valerate, contained in Qlaira® is processed by the digestive system, and converted into oestradiol, a naturally occurring oestrogen produced by women’s ovaries.[ii]

“Those prescribed Qlaira® will take one pill daily for 28 days, with the hormonal content of those pills mimicking a woman’s natural cycle,” said Dr Read. “Women are encouraged to speak to their doctor about how to take their oral contraceptive correctly and follow dosing regimens.”

The announcement of Qlaira’s® availability in Australia coincides with World Contraception Day 2010; a worldwide education day which aims to raise awareness of contraception and the need to reduce the unnecessarily high levels of unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.

Now, 50 years after the Pill was first approved, more than 100 million women globally use combination oral contraceptives.[iii]

Bayer Schering Pharma, developer of Qlaira®, is proud to continue to deliver innovative contraceptive solutions for women at every stage of their reproductive life.
